TAGL ID

Terms of Service

Effective date: August 5, 2026

1. The agreement

1.1. These Terms form an agreement between you and the developers of the Tagls project, who operate it collectively and are referred to as the "Operator" ("we"). The Operator is not an incorporated legal entity at this time; if a legal entity later assumes these Terms, the change will be announced under section 13.

1.2. "Service" means the Tagls ecosystem: the Tagls wallet application and the Tagl ID sign-in service.

1.3. By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service. You may use the Service only if you have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement.

2. Definitions

3. Beta status

3.1. The Service is in public beta. Features may change, break, or be removed without notice; data formats may change between versions.

3.2. The Operator provides no uptime or availability guarantee. Do not rely on the Service as your only means of access to anything important without keeping independent backups (section 5).

4. The Service

4.1. Tagl ID provides authentication: it lets you prove control of your tagl to relying parties. The Tagls wallet application lets you create and use tagls.

4.2. Your keys, identity data, and two-factor secrets are stored inside your tagl on your device. The Operator does not hold them and cannot recover, reset, or reproduce them. The server side stores only technical logs and data required for the sign-in protocol, as described in the Privacy Policy.

5. Your responsibilities

5.1. Custody of your tagl. You are solely responsible for keeping your tagl file safe: maintaining backup copies, protecting the file and its backups from unauthorized access, and keeping your PIN secret.

5.2. File integrity. You must preserve the tagl as an unchanged PNG file. Recompressing, editing, or converting it destroys the embedded data, as does sending it through channels that re-encode images. Practical guidance: "How to store your tagl".

5.3. Backups. You must keep at least one backup: a copy of the tagl file, the optional encrypted cloud backup (protected by your 12 recovery words), or both. After any change to your tagl (for example, adding a two-factor secret or changing the PIN), previously made file copies no longer contain the change. You are responsible for keeping the recovery words secret and available: they decrypt the cloud backup, and the Operator never holds them.

5.4. Loss. If all usable copies of your tagl are lost or damaged and no cloud backup recoverable with your words exists, access is lost permanently, including any TOTP secrets stored inside. Loss of the PIN is equally unrecoverable — neither the Operator nor the recovery words can bypass it. The Operator has no technical ability to restore access. You accept this as an inherent property of the Service's design.

5.5. Compromise. If you believe your tagl file or PIN has been exposed, follow the compromise steps in "How to store your tagl" without delay.

6. Acceptable use

6.1. You must not use the Service to break the law, to violate another person's rights, to impersonate others, to attack or overload the Service or relying parties, or to attempt to extract other users' data.

6.2. You must not probe, scan, or test the Service for vulnerabilities except as described in the responsible disclosure section of the Security page.

7. Eligibility and sanctions

7.1. You may use the Service only if doing so is lawful where you are. The Service is not available to persons or entities subject to applicable sanctions, or where sanctions law prohibits the Operator from providing it.

8. Relying parties and third-party sites

8.1. Relying parties are independent of the Operator. Signing in to a site with Tagl ID does not make the Operator responsible for that site's content, services, availability, or data practices. Review a site's own terms and privacy policy before using it.

9. Intellectual property

9.1. The Service, its software, and its content are owned by the Operator or its licensors. Your tagl file, and the data you store inside it, are yours.

10. Disclaimers

10.1. The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, availability, compatibility, or error-free operation. This reflects both the beta status of the Service and its design, in which the Operator deliberately holds no recovery capability.

10.2. Nothing in these Terms excludes a warranty or statutory right that cannot lawfully be excluded.

11. Limitation of liability

11.1. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Operator is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages; for loss of access caused by loss, corruption, re-encoding, or editing of your tagl copies, or by your failure to maintain a usable backup; for the Operator's inability to reconstruct keys or TOTP secrets it never possessed; or for the acts and omissions of relying parties.

11.2. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, and nothing removes rights that applicable consumer law does not allow you to waive.

12. Termination

12.1. You may stop using the Service at any time; deleting your tagl copies removes your identity data. Stopping use does not enable the Operator to retrieve or recover anything on your behalf.

12.2. We may suspend or terminate access for breach of these Terms or to protect the Service and its users. Where reasonably possible, we will give notice with the reason.

13. Changes to these Terms

13.1. We may update these Terms as the Service or legal requirements change. The effective date above identifies the current version; material changes will be announced on the Service before they take effect. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.

14. Governing law and disputes

14.1. The governing law and dispute forum will be fixed in these Terms when the operating legal entity is established, and the change will be announced under section 13. Until then, disputes are subject to the law that mandatorily applies to you as a consumer; nothing in these Terms removes rights that applicable consumer law does not allow you to waive.

15. General

15.1. If a provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of the right to enforce it later.

15.2. These Terms, together with the documents they expressly reference (including the Privacy Policy), form the entire agreement concerning your use of the Service.
